From the Director

Since 1982, researchers from the Center for Research on Women (CROW) have tackled a broad range of issues of critical importance to women – from work, wages and workplace discrimination, immigration, unfair labor practices, international fair and free trade, to domestic violence, sexual assault, and women’s economic status.

What began as an idea among colleagues a quarter century ago is now a thriving center of collaborative research and engaged scholarship that includes dozens of scholars dedicated to understanding and addressing problems of social inequality as they relate to gender, race, class and sexual orientation.

Your tax-deductible gift to the Center for Research on Women will help us continue to conduct scholarly research on issues that impact women’s lives, health, and economic  self-sufficiency.

Let me share a few of the important projects that our Center is currently undertaking with the support of donors like you:

Sexual Harassment of Teens in Memphis Middle and High Schools

Researchers surveyed more 590 middle and high school-aged youth in the Memphis area about the frequency, types, and long-term impact of sexual harassment experienced by teenagers in Memphis middle and high schools. Data from this important project was published in the Spring of 2009.

Violence Against Women on Campus

CROW is conducting an assessment of students’ experiences with crime and related safety issues, including relationship violence and stalking, on the UofM campus. Results and policy recommendations will be published this fall.

Infant Mortality in Memphis

CROW researchers are conducting an extensive evaluation of “Community Voice,” a program designed by the March of Dimes to improve maternal health and to reduce premature births and infant mortality in the African American community.

Preconception Health

CROW is developing a project that would address pregnancy planning, timing, and preparation for healthy pregnancy among urban adolescent girls, with the goals of preventing unintended pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes.

If you would like to support CROW’s ambitious research agenda please consider making a gift.

If you are like me, your charitable giving reflects your deepest values and priorities. By being as generous as you can in your donation to CROW, you will be supporting women, scholarly research, and the continued fight for social justice and equality.

On behalf of all of us at CROW, thank you for your support.
