The Department of Mathematical Sciences can claim five Erdos level 1 mathematicians: Ralph Faudree, Cecil Rousseau, Richard Schelp, Bela Bollobas and Jeno Lehel. An Erdos number represents the collaborative distance between an individual and Paul Erdos, an influential and itinerant Hungarian mathematician who was a prolific writer of mathematical papers. An Erdos number of 1 reflects a direct collaboration with the late mathematician, who was an adjunct professor at the U of M. Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp are among Erdos' five most frequent collaborators.
