During her 31 years as a staff member at the U of M, Susan Cohn has served in the
Department of Psychology and Graduate Admissions and, for the past nine years, as
the Administrative Secretary in the Center for International Programs. Susan is a
donor to the University through automatic payroll deduction.
In her own words, Susan describes why she is Empowering the Dream:
When I served on the Staff Senate, someone came and spoke to us about the importance
of giving back to the University. The speaker emphasized that it was not so important
how much we contributed as it was important that we contributed.
Both my husband, Howard, and I are U of M alumni and know firsthand the impact our
contributions have on the educational mission of the University of Memphis. I understand
that a major contemporary public university must have significant donor support from
the private sector. Each donation made by a staff member at the U of M, no matter
how much, lets other donors know that we care about the University. This is a very
important message to our donors in the private sector as well as those agencies and
Foundations which fund numerous services, research and educational projects and programs
at the University of Memphis.
I contribute through automatic payroll deduction because it is an easy way to contribute
and since the money never shows up in my bank account, I never miss it. I encourage
all employees, where possible, to support the University through the payroll deduction
