Laura Edwards is the Assistant Director of the Economic Club of Memphis and has been
an University of Memphis employee since 1981. She has contributed annually to the
U of M for many years through the monthly automatic payroll deduction program.
In her own words, Laura describes why she is Empowering the Dream:
The University has been very good to me and, after more than 30 years as an employee,
it really feels like 'home.' I first came to the University as a freshman college
student in 1972, and, now, 40 years later, I look back and so appreciate the long
and very rewarding relationship between me and my University. During this time, I
have earned two degrees and begun studies towards a third; developed untold lasting
relationships with colleagues, students and clients; acquired wonderful memories of
the fun and excitement watching Tiger basketball; and have had the opportunity to
be a part of the phenomenal growth of our beautiful campus in an increasingly challenging
academic environment.
I give through automatic monthly deduction from my paycheck, and though it may not
seem like much at the time, it adds up to a sizable contribution over the course of
a year. I give to a scholarship fund because it allows me to give back in a way that
not only repays the invaluable benefits that I have received from the University,
but also allows me to ‘pay forward’ for future generations of college students.
