Why did you choose University of Memphis?
I choose the University of Memphis because the people that influenced me the most were well-educated and well-spoken individuals that encouraged me to start my success at the University of Memphis.
What is unique about you? How are you different from other students at UofM?What makes me unique from other students at the University of Memphis is how I choose to fill my time away from school. I come from a low income background so I knew I'd have to get a job in the summer and after school to help fund college. Instead of getting the easiest job I could find like many of my friends, I purposely sought work that would teach me new skills as well as provide a benefit to my career. My focus is extended far and beyond any average student at the University of Memphis.
Describe any extra-curricular or community service efforts. What personal impact have
they had on you?
My nine-year-old daughter and I would go to the library every Saturday to check out books. We would spend at least three hours in the kiddy-corner reading and teaching other children new words. There were also high school students that I tutored in math and science. Helping those children every Saturday provided me with leadership skills to have the confidence to lead in a positive impactful direction. I also gained advanced communication skills.
What has your college experience been like so far?
My college experience has been remarkable, meeting different people from many backgrounds. My freshman year, I was at Southwest Tennessee Community College and became involved in college tours and service learning. As the semester passed, I found myself wanting to get involved more with college activities. I plan to become involved in many student interactions while attending the University of Memphis, such as running for student body president, studying abroad, and becoming a student ambassador.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school to receive my master's in accounting, becoming a certified public accountant and opening a non-profit organization to benefit children with barriers in education.
If you were to meet your donor in person, how would you describe what receiving a
donor-funded scholarship means to you?
Receiving this scholarship has provided me an opportunity to fulfill my dreams and goals that my financial situation would have otherwise hindered. Receiving a donor-funded scholarship lets me know that there are individuals with perseverance and compassion for others and their accomplishments. Thank you for believing in me!
