The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Memphis is proud to offer the online Bachelor of Arts in English. This degree requires a total of 120 credit hours, 60 hours of which are general education requirements, 27 hours of which must be taken in the major while the remaining hours are lower and upper division elective credits.

Those students who wish to complete the degree completely online may choose either a concentration in African American Literature or Professional Writing. Students who choose the African American literature concentration will find engaging and challenging courses that emphasize close analytic reading skills and critical thinking. Students who choose the Professional Writing concentration will learn communication skills that prepare them for careers in dynamic fields such as business, publishing and technology. All students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Arts degree in English learn to appreciate the importance of the written word and develop skills which will lead to a life of community engagement and personal growth.

You may complete this degree entirely online with concentrations in African American Literature or Professional Writing. The online courses can also be combined with courses offered at the University of Memphis campus to complete our other concentrations. Out-of-state students enrolling in the online programs do not pay out-of-state tuition but do pay an eRate.
