Career Opportunities

  • Economics is a versatile degree qualifying you for a wide range of career choices.  It instills habits of critical thinking and decision-making, and provides research and analytical skills, that are valued in many professions.  Economics majors find jobs in finance, banking, investment banking, sales and marketing, insurance and actuarial science, public administration, labor relations, foreign affairs, and journalism.

  • Economics is also great training for graduate studies, not just in Economics, but also in Finance.  Our graduates have gone on to graduate school at Harvard, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Michigan State, Washington University, the London School of Economics, the University of Houston, to name just a few.  A recent graduate is hesitating between offers from the PhD programs at MIT and Berkeley.

  • Economics is particular good preparation of Law School.  Economics majors score higher on LSAT and GRE exams than do students in other majors.

  • A recent survey revealed that economics graduates have the fifth-highest median mid-career salaries of all majors.  The only majors with higher median mid-career salaries are aerospace ($109,000), chemical, computer, and electrical engineering. The median, mid-career salary of an economics major is $101,000; the corresponding figures are $89,400 in Finance, $87,200 in MIS, $81,500 in Marketing, $77,600 in Accounting, and $72,100 in Business Management.
