CSEMS Requirements Features

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

The following are minimum requirements for all students that receive scholarships under the CSEMS program:

  1. Students must have applied for admission to The University of Memphis or are a current student at the U of M.
  2. Students must have financial need, defined by the US Department of Education rules for Federal financial aid (students must complete Federal Student Aid FAFSA application to determine financial eligibility).  Students no longer need to be  Pell Grant eligible, just eligible  for  Federal  Student  Aid.
  3. Students must be United States citizens, nationals, or aliens admitted as refuges at the time of application.
  4. Students must be enrolled full-time in engineering, engineering technology, computer science, or mathematics undergraduate degree programs.
  5. 2.6 cumulative GPA.

AWARD CRITERIA

The CSEMS committee will select a diverse group of scholarship recipients across the engineering, engineering technology, computer science, and mathematics programs:  In addition, the CSEMS committee will award scholarships using the following criteria.

  1. Student GPA
  2. Preference will be given to students who will be able to graduate within two years as demonstrated by the completion of at least 60 hours toward their degree before the scholarship is awarded.
  3. Evidence of good character, motivation, and professionalism as documented in two letters of recommendation.
  4. Students agreeing to participate in a paid, summer research or application-oriented experience will be given priority over students who do not.
  5. Students agreeing to not be employed during the fall and spring semester will be given priority over students who do not.

Students will also have the opportunity to be assigned to a paid summer career experience by matching the student's performance and program of study to the requirements of the specific position. Opportunities for funded research programs within the U of M as well as summer positions sponsored by industry partners will be available to CSEMS students. Once awarded, scholarships will as long as

  1. The student has not received their degree, but continues to make satisfactory progress toward a CSEM degree (completes at least 12 hours per semester toward their degree).
  2. The student has satisfactory performance in CSEMS related activities including the summer research or application-oriented experience.
  3. The student maintains at least a 2.0 grade point average each semester.
  4. The student continues to satisfy financial eligibility requirements.
  5. The NSF continues to fund the program.

Dr. Chrysanthe Preza, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received a $743,781 National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development Award for her research. The Career Award is the most prestigious award junior faculty members can receive from the NSF.
