Projects

The Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology, (hereafter IEAA), as part of its mandate as a Tennessee Center of Excellence, and to fulfill its research and teaching objectives, is engaged with various field projects in Egypt. Currently, the IEAA supports an epigraphic survey in the Great Hypostyle Hall of Karnak Temple in Luxor, Egypt, and partners with the Italian Archaeological Mission to Luxor at the tomb of Harwa.

Preserving The Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak

Dr. Peter J. Brand, Assistant Professor of History, Department of History, The University of Memphis is Director of the Karnak Great Hypostyle Hall Project. The goal of the project is to record all inscriptions and images on the walls and columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak.

Excavating the Tomb of Harwa

Faculty and graduate students of the Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology partnered with members of the Italian Archaeological Mission to Luxor from December 2003 to January 2004 and again in 2004-05. Lead by Dr. Francesco Tiradritti, the Italian and University of Memphis teams are excavating and restoring the tomb of Harwa, governor of the Theban nome under the Nubian pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty (ca. 770 - 712 BCE).

Valley of the Kings - KV 63

Past projects sponsored by the IEAA include excavations in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt at the tomb of King Amenmesse (KV 10) and the funerary cache discovered in 2006 in the Valley of the Kings, KV 63.
