Each year, the University of Memphis Campus School has a holiday card contest, with students in grades one through six participating. The winning entry becomes the official University of Memphis Holiday Card, which is sent electronically to 45,000+ faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the University.
This year, Nia James, a sixth grader in Dr. Hatcher’s class, was selected. Nia received a $200 U.S. savings bond, a bag of University-themed gifts, and her original artwork professionally matted and framed. Nia is the daughter of Mia and Richard James of Memphis.
At a ceremony attended by University President Shirley Raines, the top three contest winners were announced, as were the top winners from each classroom at the Campus School. The awards presentation was held at an assembly of all the students, the faculty, and students’ parents and guests.
Second place went to Kennedi Rachel, who is in Ms. Prevette’s second grade class. She received her artwork matted and framed and a $100 U.S. savings bond. She is the daughter of Kristin Young and Geroy Rachel of Memphis.
Third place was awarded to Kyoko Smith, a first-grader in Ms. McClendon’s class. She received her artwork matted and framed and a $50 U.S. savings bond. She is the daughter of Kelly Haney of Memphis.
Alumni and friends of the University of Memphis demonstrate their support in numerous ways throughout the year. We appreciate and honor those of you who act on our behalf, cheer on our efforts and give of your time and resources for the University of Memphis.
We ask that you now consider making a year-end gift to your University. Your contribution is especially important this year and will make a difference in the lives of the many students who currently call this their University.
Are you looking for the perfect gift for someone special? Make a gift in their honor, and they will receive a note card letting them know you recognized them. Additionally, your name and theirs will appear in next year’s Honor Roll of Donors.
You have many options for how you choose to give. Cash gifts are as simple as writing a check to the U of M Foundation and mailing it to Dept. 238, P.O. Box 1000, Memphis, TN 38148-0001. To make a gift online using a credit card, visit www.memphis.edu/give.htm. The University requests that all gifts made by credit card be submitted by noon December 31 to be processed in the 2008 calendar year.
Gifts to the University of Memphis of appreciated securities may offer two benefits: you may be able to take a deduction for their full value, not just their original cost, and you may avoid the capital gains tax that would be incurred if you had sold the asset.
If you are age 70 ½ or older, gifts from your retirement funds may be a wise choice, especially from your IRA. For more information on recent legislation on giving from your IRA, go to www.memphis.edu/advance/giving/ira.html.
For additional information about making a gift, please contact Marianne Minton, Director of Annual Giving at 901-678-3955 or email@example.com or Dan Murrell, Director of Planned Giving at 901-678-2732 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for your support in this season of giving. Please accept our best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!
