Winners
 The
public will step inside the University's FedEx Institute
of Technology for the very first time this Wednesday,
Nov. 19, following an 11 a.m. dedication ceremony featuring
FedEx Corp. CEO Frederick W. Smith, Gov. Phil Bredesen,
Congressman Harold Ford Jr., Congresswoman Marsha
Blackburn, Mayor Willie W. Herenton and Mayor
A C Wharton, among other dignitaries.
Alumni
and friends are invited to attend the dedication and the open
house that follows from noon to 3 p.m. The Institute is located
at Deloach and Norriswood near the corner of Central Avenue
and Patterson. Free parking will be available. Technological
demonstrations, including one on robotics, begin at 1 p.m.
and are sure to wow you.
Come
see why the Institute has been hailed as the single largest
project in U of M history and why FedEx chose to partner with
us on this amazing facility. For more information about the
Institute, visit http://fedex.memphis.edu.
The
Holiday Inn at the University of Memphis has two big
announcements. First, it's a winner! In September the hotel
won the Intercontinental Hotels Holiday Inn Brand Newcomer
of the Year Award for Service Excellence and Product Quality.
It also won this year's Zoo Rendezvous First Place award for
Best Presentation and tied for Second Place for Best Appetizer.
Second,
don't forget to make your reservations for the hotel's Thanksgiving
Day Champagne Buffet in the Grand Ballroom. Call 678-5410
for reservations or for additional information.
Students
planning to enter the U of M in Fall 2004 as first-time, incoming
freshmen may apply for the Alumni Association Scholarship.
The award is a four-year scholarship worth $1000/year ($500/semester).
Family of dues-paying Alumni Association members anytime within
the calendar year prior to the application deadline are eligible.
The
Alumni Scholars Program encourages children and grandchildren
of Alumni Association members to make the U of M their first
choice for higher education. The application, which includes
more detailed eligibility requirements, is available online
at http://www.memphis.edu/AlumniScholarshipForm.pdf
and is due on January 31, 2004. Please contact Becky McCoy
at 901/678-2930 or by e-mail at bmccoy@memphis.edu for additional
information.
Attend
the Herff College of Engineering's open house and you
can experience the thrill of being in the cockpit of a U.S.
Navy Blue Angels F/A-18 Hornet, see the impact of an earthquake
demonstration, learn what it takes to map a heartbeat, or
find out how to control an industrial robot. The free event
will be held Friday, Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the
Herff College.
The
simulator offers realistic, supersonic flight and cutting-edge
entertainment technology. Rides provide a pilot's perspective
with all the sights, sounds and experiences of up-close flying.
In
addition to the flight simulator, visitors can learn more
about the impact engineers have on society, what it takes
to become an engineer and the types of engineering research
conducted at the Herff College. Tours may be arranged for
groups.
Faculty,
staff and current students will be on hand to answer questions
and discuss specific engineering programs.
Congratulations
to the 19 alumni and students who were named to the Memphis
Business Journal's "Top 40 Under 40" list for
2003. The U of M was the most-named higher education institution
among this year's recipients.
