Future college students will find answers to their questions about college life when the University of Memphis holds its annual Campus Day on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The event is free, but registration is necessary. Online registration is available at http://recruitment.memphis.edu. The deadline for reservations is Sept. 26.
The event, which is also is open to students’ family members, will begin with a picnic lunch and entertainment by the University’s pop music group, Sound Fuzion. U of M President Shirley Raines and basketball head coach John Calipari will welcome the visitors to the campus. Throughout the day, University representatives will be on hand to provide visitors with information about admissions, residence life, scholarships and financial aid, student organizations, academic programs, and student services. Guests also will have a chance to visit academic departments of their choice, to talk with faculty, and to tour the campus.
A panel of U of M parents will give a presentation on how to help students make the transition to college life. A panel of current students also will be available to answer questions from their perspective. For more information, call 901-678-2169 or 800-669-2678.
The University of Memphis invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Business and Finance. This position is responsible for a critical division within the university, working directly with the President to accomplish the vision and mission of the University of Memphis to become one of America’s great metropolitan research universities. The Vice President will serve on the President’s Council, along with the Provost, four other Vice Presidents, and the Athletic Director. The Division of Business and Finance is responsible for the management of University fiscal, physical, and human resources within a University annual operating budget of nearly $400 million.

Sustainable Technologies Awareness Day will be celebrated at the University of Memphis on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The free event will be held on the Student Plaza, directly in front of the Administration Building, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The campus-wide event will encourage environmental awareness, inquiry, and activism among the U of M community.
It is sponsored by the Center for Biofuel Energy & Sustainable Technologies (BEST), a group of faculty from various U of M colleges who want to promote causes that will improve the quality of life for future generations through sustainable energy systems and practices.
Sustainable Technologies Awareness Day will feature current and planned sustainability initiatives at the University of Memphis and by our partners.
These include BEST’s Biodiesel Production Unit,
that will convert recycled cooking oil from the Tiger Den dining facilities into biodiesel fuel for use in university generators, vehicles, and the Physical Plant.
Residence Life will showcase plans for the new West Hall, the first and most sustainable (“green”) public building to be constructed in the state of Tennessee.
Other participating organizations from off-campus will include the West Tennessee Center for Clean Cities Coalition; the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department; the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy; Memphis Light Gas and Water (MLGW); the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA); and the University Neighborhood Development Corporation.

The Herff College of Engineering Alumni Chapter seeks nominations for its 2009 Outstanding Alumni Award recipient. Student Ambassador Board Mudball
The Student Ambassador Board will be hosting its annual fundraising event, Mudball, at Tiger Beach (Richardson Towers North Lawn) on Saturday, October 4, at noon. Loewenberg School of Nursing
The Loewenberg School of Nursing is sending 88 alumni, students and faculty to the Dominican Republic on October 8-13 to treat up to 500 patients per day in makeshift clinics. Participants will be taking much needed basic hygiene items and medications to this underprivileged country. Additional supplies are still needed.
