Sustainable Technologies Awareness Day will be celebrated at the University of Memphis on October 6. The free event will be held on the Student Plaza, directly in front of the Administration Building, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sustainable Technologies Awareness Day will encourage environmental awareness, inquiry, and activism among the U of M community. The campus-wide event will feature current and planned sustainability initiatives at the University of Memphis and by our partners.
It is sponsored by the Center for Biofuel Energy & Sustainable Technologies (BEST), a group of faculty from various U of M colleges who want to promote causes that will improve the quality of life for future generations through sustainable energy systems and practices.
Other sponsors include the Herff College of Engineering, School of Public Health, Marketing and Supply Chain Management, Environmental Research Center, Public Health Student Association, Environmental Action Club and Student Government Association.
“We’re a U of M family,” explains Alumni Association member Randy McPherson (BSEd ’80, MS ’84, EdD ’93).
Dr. McPherson has three degrees from the College of Education, his wife Karen (BA ’78, MS ’83) has two degrees from the University of Memphis, and his son Tyler, an Emerging Scholar majoring in English and Pre-law will, like his parents, soon be another outstanding graduate of the University of Memphis.
“That’s why I wanted to give back to the University,” he adds. Dr. McPherson, a school counselor who was the first in Tennessee and among the first in the nation to achieve National Board Certification, saw a gap in support services for school counselors.
Because of that, he designed and now teaches a course to assist other counselors who want to become National Board Certified as an adjunct faculty member in the College of Education’s Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology & Research.
“I want to help other counselors because I think it’s important to the kids in our schools,” he says. “I’m committed to making our community a better place and I’m glad to be able to do that through the U of M.”
