Although this course is titled "Practical English Grammar," the study of grammar is
both theoretical and practical. Our general aim is to analyze English grammar so that
its complexities can be taught to others. We identify structures that constitute well-formed
English sentences, systematizing rules that you probably follow without even realizing
it. We distinguish between rules for formal written English and those for informal
spoken varieties, and we consider the role of the speech community in determining
the forms that people use. To describe grammatical structures, we rely on the Reed-Kellogg
system of diagramming sentences, originally devised in the late nineteenth century.
Although other methods have been popularized since then, the practical side of using
Reed-Kellogg is that it is still used to teach grammar in elementary schools today.

Graded work will include a number of daily quizzes covering readings and class discussion, fiver major tests, and a comprehensive final exam.
