This course is designed especially for Graduate Teaching Assistants in the University
of Memphis’s First-Year Composition program––though interested graduate students from
across the university may enroll––and seeks to provide the rudiments of teaching composition
at the college level. Participants are introduced to some key disciplinary concepts
in Rhetoric and Composition as a means of exploring pedagogical strategies and theoretical
considerations important in the processes of writing.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

Employ effective pedagogical strategies for teaching writing processes;

Distinguish between more effective and less effective writing instruction;

Design a composition course consistent with desired learning outcomes;

Recognize the theoretical underpinnings of your own and others’ writing pedagogy.
