Students in the ESL concentration follow an integrated program of study that helps
them develop expertise in the many areas included in ESL: second language acquisition,
cross-cultural issues, language policy and planning, and second/foreign language instruction.
Besides developing skills in analyzing language, assessing language ability, and planning
language instruction, students apply their knowledge through internships in the U.S.
and in other countries.
Students majoring in either ESL or Linguistics often take courses in both areas. The
University of Memphis offers both a B.A. and an M.A. with a concentration in ESL.
Both degrees require courses in Linguistics as well as in ESL.
It is also possible to earn an M.A. in ESL completely online.
An average of two Linguistics and three ESL courses are taught each semester on both
the undergraduate and graduate levels. Summer courses and workshops are also offered
for teachers seeking an add-on endorsement in ESL.
Some graduate students teach English abroad in the Czech Republic, China, Korea, and in Japan. Students have also presented papers at professional
conferences such as The Southeastern Conference on Linguistics, NWAVE, Tennessee TESOL,
and International TESOL.
