The PhD program in Applied Linguistics prepares students to teach and conduct original
research at the college level in the US and abroad. Students specialize in areas of
applied linguistics, including teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL),
discourse analysis, second language writing and others. The degree also prepares students for researching the linguistic needs of specific
environments such as the legal or medical fields and for consulting in the multicultural
workplace.
Students take courses in both ESL and linguistics, many of which are offered online.
Students may also choose to pursue opportunities to teach abroad in the Czech Republic
or Spain. Students are active researchers and often present papers at professional
conferences such as SECOL, SETESOL, NWAVE, Tennessee TESOL and International TESOL.
