Undergraduate Linguistics Concentration
The Language and Linguistics Concentration at the University of Memphis specializes
in applied linguistics such as dialectology, language acquisition, and sociolinguistics.
Core areas of linguistic study include phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and
pragmatics, and discourse analysis.
The Language and Linguistics Concentration provides students with the tools necessary
to investigate language. Students confront the questions, theories, and methods of
exploring language as a system. In addition to the theoretical nature of language
study, students explore the real-life implications of language for literature, English
as a Second Language, composition, language development, and the social dimensions
of language and linguistics.
In addition to the 12-hour English Core Requirement, Linguistics/ESL majors must choose
12 hours from the following list.
- 3501 Modern English Grammar
- 3511 Introduction to Linguistics
- 3521 The American Language
- 4501 History of the English Language
- 4511 Language and Literature (W)
- 4521 Language and Society (I)
- 4540-50 Topics in Language and Linguistics
- 4900 Independent Study (only in Language/Linguistics)
- 4996 Honors Thesis (only in Language and Linguistics) (W)
ESL majors must choose 12 hours from the following list.
- 4530 Practicum in ESL
- 4531 Methods and Techniques in ESL
- 4532 Skills, Approaches, and Assessment for ESL (C)
- 4533 Issues and Techniques in English as a Foreign Language
- 4900 Independent Study (only in ESL)
- 4996 Honors Thesis (only in ESL) (W)
Students are encouraged to take 4531 and/or 4532 as part of their concentration. Students
may apply up to 6 hours of courses chosen from Language and Linguistics toward the
ESL concentration. Students may apply up to 6 hours of English 4530 (Practicum) toward
their concentration.
