Officially Being Designated an English Major

Students who declare English as their major upon admission to the University need not worry about any official declaration. The same is true for those students transferring their entire folders from the Academic Counseling Center. However, students who have already declared another major and want to change their major to English must go to Scates Hall 107 and officially declare their major in the College of Arts and Sciences. As a courtesy, they should inform their former advisor of the change and pick up any pertinent records to bring to the English Advisor.

Undergraduate Advising

The English Undergraduate Advising Office is located in Patterson 435. In addition to advising during the registration process, the Undergraduate Advisor maintains a database of all English majors, assists in graduation planning, offers career information, and hears undergraduate student complaints. While it is possible to see the advisor briefly without an appointment, students who wish specific information should make an appointment by calling 678-4500.

All English majors are required to communicate with the departmental advisor before registering each semester. In addition, majors are expected to keep the advisor informed of changes in address or phone numbers.

Consultants for Concentrations

Major and Minor Requirements

The current requirements for an English major or minor are listed in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Because only 42 hours of English will count toward the Bachelor's degree, students should be aware of all catalog requirements and choose courses carefully in consultation with the advisor.

Please see the Undergraduate Bulletin for restrictions regarding the number of Special Topics hours and Independent Study hours that will apply toward a concentration.

Note: English majors must earn a C or better in all English classes, and English 3500 and English 3603 do not apply toward the English major or minor.

Countdown to Graduation

When a student has completed a total of 85 credit hours, s/he should file "Intent to Graduate" by filling out the proper cards in Scates 107. The Graduation Analyst will furnish to the student and to the Undergraduate Advisor a "Summary of Coursework Remaining." The student should schedule an appointment with the Undergraduate Advisor to plan future semesters, to clarify any remaining questions, and to have the form signed.

Senior Exit Examinations

Every five years the English Department is required to administer an area exit exam to its graduates, in addition to the required Senior Exam. This test was last administered during Spring 2008 and will likely be next administered during the 2013-14 academic year.
