Beginning with the Fall, 2009 semester the department offers a single Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (B.S.E.T.) degree. This consolidated degree program is comprised of a comprehensive core and various fields of study from which the student may select in order to best fulfill their needs. These fields of study have been assembled from the previous three separate majors in the department.
The Department of Engineering Technology historically offered three undergraduate majors leading to a degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (B.S.E.T). These majors are Computer, Electronics and Manufacturing Engineering Technology. Students currently in these programs will need to complete their degree requirements prior to August, 2010 at which time accreditation of these programs by the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of ABET, Inc. will expire. Students who will not graduate prior to this date will need to update to the consolidated B.S.E.T. program.
The graduate of a engineering technology program is known as a technologist, which is a vital member of the team of technicians, technologists, and engineers, dealing with applications, operations, solving complex problems, and engineering support rather than design. Studies indicate there is a need for approximately 400,000 engineering technologists per year to meet the challenges of modern society in the United States. Graduates of the Department of Engineering Technology are employed with major corporations at professional salary levels.
