Beginning with the Fall, 2009 semester the Department of Engineering Technology will offer a single Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (B.S.E.T.) degree. This consolidated degree program is comprised of a comprehensive core and various fields of study from which the student may select in order to best fulfill their needs. These fields of study have been assembled from the previous three separate majors in the department.
There are a number of advantages to the new program including:
- Credit for courses already completed in Engineering Technology will apply to the new program
- Degree requirements are less prescriptive, allowing more choice of fields of study and elective courses
- While advising students over the summer, we have found that many students will be able to complete degree requirements sooner
Students who are currently enrolled as Computer Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology majors will need to complete their degree requirements prior to August, 2010 at which time accreditation of these programs by the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of ABET, Inc. will expire. Students who will not graduate prior to this date will want to update to the consolidated B.S.E.T. program so that they will graduate from an accredited program. Graduation from an accredited program is vitally important in pursuit of employment and advanced studies.
Complete information on the new program is located on the Engineering Technology web site at http://www.memphis.edu/et/academics/et_undergrad_cons.php
Mr. Thomas Banning will be serving as the program coordinator for the new undergraduate program.
