In this 2.5-day course, two career CIOs will share their insights gained over decades working for Fortune 500 companies. During the first day, the CIO faculty will introduce the role of the CIO and offer a broad and comprehensive overview of the topics all CIOs must deal with. Day Two will entail a deeper dive on those topics that specifically help CIOs drive value in their organizations, and on the final day, emerging issues and challenges will be discussed. The format will be highly interactive, and is designed for those who already occupy the CIO office, as well as those IT managers and professionals with CIO aspirations.

Faculty: Rick Pride, Pat Ruckh, and Special Appearance by Rob Carter

Rick Pride and Pat Ruckh, University of Memphis Executives in Residence, will lead the program, with Rob Carter, FedEx EVP and Chief Information Officer and one of world’s most highly regarded CIOs, will also share his thoughts.

Rob Carter is a member of the five-person Executive Committee, which plans and executes Fedex’s strategic business activities. Carter is responsible for setting technology direction, as well as the corporation’s key applications and technology infrastructure. FedEx applications, advanced networks and data centers provide around-the-clock and around-the-globe support for the product offerings of FedEx. Carter joined FedEx in 1993 and has nearly 30 years of systems development and implementation experience. Carter earned his bachelor’s degree in computer and information science from the University of Florida and his master’s degree from the University of South Florida. Carter’s professional awards include: Information Week Chief of the Year Award (2000, 2001, 2005); CIO magazine’s 100 Award (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006); and InfoWorld Chief Technology Officer of the Year (2000). Carter is a member of the Saks Inc. Board of Directors and the University of Florida Foundation Board of Trustees. He also serves as chairman of the Capital Campaign for the University of Tennessee Hamilton Eye Institute and as a member of the Memphis Riverfront Development Corporation and the LifeBlood Foundation.

Rick Pride is an accomplished information management executive with over 30 years of experience providing global business and technology leadership. His industry background includes heath-care, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and consumer products. He has provided and led global IT support and services for sales, marketing, manufacturing, quality, research & development, customer service and logistics as well as the administrative functions of the business. Most recently, Rick was Chief Information Officer of Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics, a global orthopedic medical device company. Former roles include VP & CIO of Maybelline and senior leadership roles at Bristol-Myers Squibb as head of Clairol and the BMS International Consumer Products Divisions. Rick graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in computer science. He has an MBA from the University of Evansville with a specialty in Quantitative Business Analysis and is APICS certified in Supply Chain management. Currently Rick serves as president of the Memphis chapter of the Society for Information Management and is on the U of M MIS Advisory Council.

Patrick Ruckh has 40 years of business experience, which included 30 Years in IT. His last seven years he served as the CIO for First Horizon/First Tennessee, a $37 billion financial institution, which included an IT budget in excess of $200 million. During his time at First Horizon he reduced expenses by $25 million annually, while improving service levels and installing numerous new systems. He also outsourced a portion of the Systems Development group to India. During his six years at Bank of Hawaii, he had responsibility for personnel and systems from Singapore to New York. He had outsourced sites in Guam and Fiji. He spent 17 years with First Interstate Bank in Denver. His assignments included SVP of Bank Systems, EDP Audit Director and CFO of a subsidiary. He also was on the Board of Directors of Minibank, a regional ATM network. He currently serves on the Advisory Board's of the University of Memphis and the University of Kansas. He is a Certified Internal Auditor and was recently named CIO of the Year by Bank Systems & Technology. He has his MBA from the University of Colorado and his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas.
