Cervetti and Stafford Win Best Paper Award
Michael Cervetti and Marla Stafford have been awarded a Best Paper Award for "The Use of Performance Control Charts in
Higher Education." The award was presented at the 2010 International Conference on
Learning and Administration in Higher Education held in Nashville, Tennessee. The
purpose of this research was to present a formative teacher evaluation process. The
approach presented utilized one of the most basic of business techniques, the quality
control chart. However, this studied differed in how a typical QCC would be used.
While a typical QCC allows the quality engineer to detect deviation from established
standards, the QCC used in this study welcomes change and "out of control" processes.
The authors show how a QCC can be adapted to a classroom and allow an instructor
to analyze the information gleaned from the chart to make appropriate changes during
the school year. Hence, we referred to the QCC used in this study as a Performance
Control Chart.
