Honors Program on the March!
On the evening of April 16, approximately seventy Fogelman honors students, scholarship
recipients, faculty, and administrators gathered at the Rose Theatre for the first
Fogelman honors/scholarship banquet, which will become an annual event. Doug Browne,
General Manager, The Peabody Memphis and Vice President, Peabody Hotels, the evening's
featured speaker, inspired his audience with amusing anecdotes and insightful observations
gleaned from his successful career in the hospitality business. Dean Rajiv Grover
provided an overview of the many creative programs that are being implemented in the
Fogelman College, programs that address not only the academic needs of students but
their physical and social needs and ethical concerns as well. Whitney Brown, Academic
Services Coordinator for the Fogelman College, provided some specifics as to the many
scholarships and internships available to Fogelman students. Professor Irvin Tankersley,
Director of the Fogelman Honors Program, noted that many improvements in the Fogelman
honors program have recently been implemented and encouraged suggestions as to ways
in which the honors program can be bettered. Seniors Stephen Sloas and Matthew Hedgepeth
spoke, respectively, on "What My Scholarship Means to Me" and "What the Honors Program
Means to Me." Professor Charlene Spiceland of the School of Accountancy received
the Fogelman Honors Teacher of the Year Award and Anthony M. LaRocca, a senior management
major, the Fogelman Honors Student of the Year Award.
