Carol Danehower researches and rallies against domestic violence

For the past two years, Carol Danehower has been working on a project to help curb the growing incidence of domestic violence in our society. The mission, according to the website erasedomesticcrime.com, is to “connect victims and volunteers to local services and resources, with the goals of rescuing those in danger and empowering those seeking to participate in a community response to domestic violence.”

Danehower, an associate professor with the Department of Management at FCBE, held a workshop along with the Memphis Area Women's Council in late October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The panel focused on the increasing need for awareness by, and policies against, domestic violence among local employers as more and more of these occurrences carry over from the home into the workplace.

Danehower encourages colleagues in the workplace who suspect a domestic violence situation is occurring to “recognize, respond, refer.”

The University chapter of the  Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) was a sponsor and several area companies, including ServiceMaster and First Tennessee, as well as Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc., took part in the event.

Danehower says she plans to begin collecting data for the project beginning in January and that the recent public forum should help in that effort.
