Fogelman College Professor, Dr. Charles Pierce, Honored as a SMA Fellow

Charles (Chuck) Pierce, a professor and department chairman of management at the University of Memphis, was elected as a Fellow of the Southern Management Association (SMA). He will be formerly inducted on Wednesday, October 31, 2012. SMA is a domestic affiliate of the Academy of Management.  Its primary mission is to advance the research, teaching, learning, and practice of management.

SMA is dedicated to the development and dissemination of new ideas and approaches to the research, teaching, and practice of management. It strives to keep members abreast of new knowledge and practices in the field and to create a professional community that exchanges ideas and provides assistance to others.

Dr. Pierce was elected as a SMA Fellow because of his research on topics such as workplace romance, sexual harassment in organizations, test bias and discrimination in employee selection, and organizational research methods (e.g., quantitative methods for estimating moderating effects in the context of employee selection; statistical methods in employment discrimination litigation; meta-analysis).

His research has been published in a number of leading academic journals including Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Organizational Behavior & Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management, Human Resource Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Educational & Psychological Measurement and Organizational Research Methods.

Dr. Pierce’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and has received awards including best paper in the Journal of Organizational Behavior and the Academy of Management's Research Methods Division Robert McDonald Advancement of Organizational Research Methodology award.

The Southern Management Association Fellowship election is a highly selective process. Candidates for membership must be nominated by an active SMA Fellow, and seconded by two active Fellows. Neither nominators nor seconders may be members of the faculty where a candidate received a terminal degree or currently holds an appointment. Affirmation of 60 percent of the voting Fellows is required for election.

Presently, the SMA membership consists of over 900 management professors, doctoral students, and executives representing more than 200 colleges, universities, and business firms in 43 states and several foreign countries.
