For release:  March 17, 2014

Fogelman College recently placed fifth overall in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Investment Challenge, finishing above both Vanderbilt University and The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Advised by Dr. Steven J. Jordan, visiting professor in the Department of Finance, finance students earned an annual return of 41.93% on the Memphis TVA Student Managed Fund for 2013, more than 12% above the annual return of the S&P500 which is used as the challenge’s benchmark. The University of Memphis was awarded a performance bonus of $9515 by TVA for the superior performance of their student managed portfolio.

The TVA Investment Challenge Program aims to provide a real-world learning experience to participating students in the field of portfolio management. Students are provided the opportunity to actively manage TVA funds by designing investment strategies, calling in trades and providing performance reports to the TVA. Students also learn how to manage real money and develop practical skills useful for making stock investment decisions, either for their own investment portfolio or for potential career opportunities in the mutual or hedge fund industries.
