Alumni Giving FAQs

Q: Why is alumni giving so important?
A: First, alumni giving is one of the seven categories that U.S. News & World Report uses to determine its ranking for colleges and universities. Second, your gift makes a difference by enabling your college to maximize its potential by providing our future leaders more opportunities, more often.

Q: How does U.S. News & World Report ranking help the University of Memphis?
A: The U.S. News & World Report is looked at by many of our prospective students. As our ranking increases, so will the quantity and quality and quality of our students. Improving the ranking of the university will also add value to your degree.

Q: Does my $20 gift count towards the alumni giving participant rate?
A: Yes. Any gift is appreciated and counts toward our alumni giving participation rate in U.S. News & World Report.

Q: How are gifts used by the Fogelman College?
A: Gifts made directly to the Fogelman College of Business & Economics are used to enhance the learning of our students. Examples of how gifts are used include scholarship support for our students, faculty & student research, improvement of our course and program support, enhancement of our classroom and facilities through renovations, and much much more.

Q: Can I designate my gift to a certain department in the Fogelman College?
A: Yes. You can designate where you want your gift to go. You can specify any department, student organization, or program that you would like. We want to provide flexibility to our supporters of the Fogelman College.

Q: Is my annual gift tax deductible?
A: Yes. The University of Memphis Foundation is a qualified tax-exempt corporation under Section 501 (c) (3), and the University of Memphis is a tax exempt government entity under Section 501 (a) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code; therefore, your contributions are tax deductible to the extent provided by law.
