Department of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate Degree Programs
The finance program provides basic concepts, principles and analytical tools essential
for making financial decisions and operating financial institutions. These decisions
may be made within corporations, financial institutions such as banks, brokerage firms,
insurance companies, and real estate management. Most concepts are also valuable to
the individual in personal and small business decision making.
At the undergraduate level the department offers four concentrations: banking and
financial services, business finance, real estate and risk management and insurance.
The concentration in banking and financial services prepares students for decisions
required in the management of financial institutions and covers the theory and practice
of the management of financial institutions as practiced by financial institution
managers, financial consultants and regulators of financial institutions. Financial institutions include commercial banks, savings banks, credit unions, investment
banks, insurance companies, mutual funds and finance companies.
The finance concentration concentrates on decisions concerning stocks, bonds, fixed-income
securities, derivatives, foreign exchange, capital markets, capital budgeting and
financial management of corporations.
The concentration in real estate includes corporate finance, financial institutions,
principles of real estate, appraisal, real estate finance and real estate law. The
real estate degree is offered both online and on campus. In addition to an undergraduate
degree in real estate, the department also offers a certificate in real estate that awards University of Memphis credit without require formal admission to the
university. The certificate in real estate program, which is offered both online and
on campus is designed for real estate professionals or those who desire to become
a real estate professional.
The concentration in risk management and insurance includes study in the areas of
investments, corporate finance, financial institutions, principles of insurance, risk
management, property and liability insurance, and life and health insurance.
At the masters level, the department offers a Master of Science in Business Administration
concentration in Finance and supports the finance requirements in each of the five MBA programs: the MBA,
EMBA, IMBA, CDMBA and the online MBA.
The Department also offers a Ph.D. in Finance.
