Overview

The concentration in risk management and insurance includes study in the areas of investments, corporate finance, financial institutions, principles of insurance, risk management, property and liability insurance, and life and health insurance.  The knowledge and analytical abilities acquired by students majoring in Risk Management and Insurance prepare them for rewarding careers. There are many diverse employment opportunities in Risk Management and Insurance.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities in risk management and insurance include sales (agent, broker, direct writer), claims, underwriting, ratemaking, risk management, loss control, investments, accounting, data processing, law, and other functional areas.

Scholarships and Internships:

Scholarships are available from the Memphis RIMS Chapter.  In past semesters, majors with a 2.5 GPA or better have received financial support.  Insurance Women of Memphis also provides a scholarship.

Internships are available with local private and public entities.  Many students participate in the campus and off-campus opportunities through college internship programs, and industry introductory positions.

Course Requirements:
In addition to the College of Business (B.B.A) course requirements (see Undergraduate Catalog Finance homepage), the Finance major with a concentration in risk management and insurance requires 24 course hours.

Minor Requirements:

For students whose major is in another department in The Fogelman College of Business and Economics: (9 hours) FIR 3810, 4870, and three additional upper division hours in insurance approved by the risk management and insurance career advisor or department chair.

For students whose major is within another college at the University: (21 hours) ACCT 2010; ECON 2020; SCMS 2710; FIR 3810, 4870, and six additional upper division hours in insurance or finance approved by the risk management and insurance career advisor or department chair.

* Listed requirements are valid for the 2013 catalog. A minimum 2.25 GPA is required in the major.
