The following codes will be used in the charts below to indicate what GenEd each course satisfies:

C03: It's a World of Difference

College is a different and exciting world! In this learning community, you will learn the numerous differences (cultural, social, political, historical, culinary, artistic, etc.) that the university boasts and recognize that this world of difference is a wonderful place to inhabit. Through the learning community you will be introduced to similarities and differences in world cultures, learn to communicate with different audiences, and explore The University of Memphis' many offerings.

C04: Entry to Engineering

Students will explore the paths leading to an Engineering career.  Students will be expected to enroll in an appropriate math course, based on their ALEKS math placement score and particular engineering track.

*Students register for an appropriate MATH as the 3rd learning community course.

C05: Honors STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics)

Members of this learning community must be Honors students in a STEM area.
This learning community is for honors students in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.  Honors Calculus forms the base course for students as they begin their studies toward becoming scientists or academics.

Total: 9 hrs.

*Please note that MATH 1421 meets 3 days a week.

C06: Connections for Future Teachers

Thinking about teaching as a career?  Discover where education has been and where it is going while developing the essential communication skills you'll need in the classroom.

C09: Law and Order

Explore the political and legal systems of America and other nations.  This learning community will focus on differing concepts of law and order and the reality of maintaining law and order in American society.

C10 & C11: Pre-Health

Are you thinking about a career in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or one of the allied health professions? Students in this learning community will examine multiple educational paths leading to health care professions, explore the numerous career opportunities that exist within the field, meet a variety of health care professionals, and focus on developing the skills needed for success as a student and beyond!

 C12: Psychology

Interested in psychology as a major? This learning community will explore the different disciplines within the field of psychology, and the various directions choosing a career in the field could take you.

 C15: Political Rights and Society

Why do people come together to form states? When we live in groups, we have to consider other people's needs and wants, and make decisions about how we are going to interact and who will be in charge. This learning community will look at the relationship between rights and responsibilities, and the ethical questions raised as we try to figure out how to live together.

C16: Building Connections

College is a different and exciting world!  Learning to make meaningful connections with fellow students and faculty is essential in finding your way in this new environment.  This learning community will help and support you in making these connections and prepare you intellectually, socially, and culturally for your college career.

C17: Building Connections (with Combined English)

Learning to make meaningful connections with students, between classes, and with faculty is essential to college academic success. This learning community will help and support you in making these connections in the first semester of college and beyond.

C18: Pre-Nursing

The nursing profession has experienced tremendous growth in the last few years, and it is expected to continue. This learning community is for Pre-Nursing students who want to explore the skills needed to be successful in the nursing profession.  Students will learn what it takes to be admitted into a nursing program while fulfilling basic Pre-Nursing requirements.

C19: Career Discovery

Undecided on a major or what career to follow in life? Then this learning community is for you. In these courses you will explore resources, personal assessments, and develop an individualized career plan for success!

C20: Hunger Games

The institutions in place in Susan Collins' The Hunger Games represent more than just the world of the author's imagination. The interactions of the Districts, the power in place at the Capitol, and the delineation of power among the citizens all take on new meaning when compared to our current systems of power. The Hunger Games seminar will look at power structures and institutions critically through discussions, readings, and activities designed to bring the issues in the book into a more revealing perspective.

C22: Future Business Leaders

Thinking about a major in business or are you confused about what those "in business" do? This learning community will introduce you to professors and successful professionals who will provide the specifics regarding careers in the various majors offered by the Fogelman College of Business and Economics. Make an enlightened decision as to just what kind of "businessperson" you want to be!

C23: I Lead - Finding Your Leadership Potential and Applying it at the U Of M

This community will focus on students discovering their leadership potential, finding opportunities to apply skills and connection with other students. Instructor will provide a framework for students to discuss share and learn the value of leadership and community engagement. Students will engage in "leadership themed" classroom discussions, meet and interact with campus and community leaders and train each other on how to develop individual and group leadership skills.  All majors are encouraged to participate in this community.

C24: Social Media and your future in Higher Education

Social media has impacted how we connect and engage with persons from our community and the world. It has created opportunities and challenges for the current college student. We will discuss this and more in this community. Students in this course will explore how social media has changed communication, how it affects their future and how they can use it for connection and learning. Active use of several social media platforms will be a course requirement.

C25: Student Success Program (with Combined English)

This learning community will prepare students intellectually, socially, and culturally to acclimate to the college environment.

C26: Environmental History

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."—George Santayana
Human interaction with the natural world over time will be explored in this learning community.  Physical earth science will be applied to understanding, evaluating, and solving problems encountered in the environment by past human populations.  These lessons from the past can give us clues about how to build a sustainable environment for the future.   Current environmental challenges like the spread of infectious diseases, the loss of biodiversity, the decreasing supply of non-renewable resources like oil, and climate change will be explored.

C28 & C33: Nursing for Freshman Admits

This learning community is for students who have been accepted into the Loewenberg School of Nursing. Students will interact with nursing faculty, staff, and nursing students to examine a professional nursing career. Students will also explore the skills and strategies needed to be successful in the nursing program.

C29: The World As A Stage

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” – William Shakespeare - This learning community will explore the artistic expression of theater, its impact on human culture and how human culture has impacted it.

C30: Future Business Leaders for Honors Students

Members of this learning community must be Honors students.
Communicate, Communicate, Communicate!  It is critical that future entrepreneurs, managers, financial analysts, and others in the business world have an excellent command of written and oral communication.  Learn more about the numerous opportunities within the business profession, as well as develop the communication skills that will serve you well in the classroom and beyond.

C31:Lessons from the Past

"What can we learn from the past?" Do we as humans make the same mistakes over and over again, or do we learn from our past mistakes, as well as our successes? Through archaeology and history we are presented with a bewildering array of information, but how much of it is relevant for our modern society. When knowledge of the past is relevant, why do we choose to ignore it?  We will read about past cultures and discuss their failures and their message to us through the immense void of time.
