Lost and Found

“Of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most.” - Mark Twain

Reading that quote, I feel as if it was said with me in mind for it really applies to this past week of my college life. Do you ever feel as if you’re forgetting something? Sometimes you may actually have forgotten something, while other times you haven’t forgotten anything at all, though those around you try to convince you otherwise. Well, either way I know I feel stupid. I mean this was definitely one of those “lost things” weeks, and also a week spent searching for my mind.

Let me tell you a little about my past, again. You see sometimes, not always, those around me (usually my parents and teachers) may have used the word “scatterbrained” to describe me. I, of course, like the way my friend (good friend) changed that into saying I was “creative”. Well, okay, I’ll admit it. I may not have been the most organized at times, but I had good intentions. Hey, that at least counts for something, right? I’ll move on before I completely lose my point and show you how it is relative to my week.

This week I thought I had done well with organizing my schedule, balancing both my studies and friends. You know, I was being a good student. Then, halfway through my week I decide to stay near my next class, since there is a big break of time between two classes, studying while I waited. After my long study break, I headed off to class ten minutes early. On arrival, I noticed that my class had already started.

Panicky, I checked my watch trying to figure out how I was possibly late. Indeed, I was late. In fact, I had mistakenly confused the start time with the end time for this particular class. I was so embarrassed! Why would I share such embarrassment that could easily go unnoticed, with you? I guess to show you how I, as an entering freshman with little knowledge, was able to learn from this big mistake. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not telling you to miss class or anything, for it was very hard to fix my mistake.

Instead, I will show you the steps I took to fix the problem.

As soon as the class let out, I pulled my friend to the side and set up a time to get her notes. Then, I went and faced my professor, apologizing and asking what I could do. Luckily, he was very kind and advised me to get notes from another (all right! one down). Then, he told me to make an appointment with him if I had further questions. Yet, the kindest thing he did for me was to tell me not to stress about missing this class one time, for he said it was a common “freshman” mistake. Instead, he told me to learn from it and make an adjustment so it wouldn’t happen again. Learn from the past, to make the future better.

That was my major mistake for the week and don’t worry, Mom, it won’t happen again. Yet, there were other little things that made me doubt my sanity. For example, I saw this girl and approached her, thinking I knew her. Of course, I evidently didn’t nor did she know me, and made a fool of myself. Then, one of the girls on my floor started telling me how she heard I made the best cookies. I asked her how she knew and she replied that such-and-such told her I made some really good cookies this week. Either such-and-such imagined yummy cookies due to lack of good food or met my cookie-making clone, for I didn’t make cookies. I don’t have any cookie-making ingredients or even a pan. Lastly, as most freshmen know by now, not all staircases lead to the same place. In fact, if you take the wrong one you could be lost into some black hole forever, never finding your class again. I guess I need to start carrying a map again. Even with a map, though, I wonder if someone changes the door numbers around. I guess I just have a bad sense of direction. Yeah, after these events, no wonder I feel like I've lost my mind.

In conclusion, my week was filled with confused times, mistaken identities, and the occasional black hole. Yet, I learned valuable lessons from my past, thanks to helpful teachers, and ways to fix my future mistakes. I may have temporarily lost my mind, but by the end of this week I found it again. Well, most of it. By the way, I saw a seminar called “College Adjustment and Making the Most of Your Time”. I think I will go to it.

At the beginning of school, I went to the India Fest held on campus. The girl on the left is dressed in costume.

At this stand you could get your picture taken dressed as an Indian bride and groom.

They had all types of authentic indian food for sale at the Indian Fest.

Here I get a henna tatoo by one of the five artists who were there. Notice the intricate pattern she follows.

Here my friend Priscilla gets henna on her ankle.

Priscilla and Richard take a moment to show off Richard's henna on his arm. We have started a new trend.

These ladies sold handmade shirts with intricate embroidery.

This is just one of the many stands they had where you could learn a little about India. Also, they would write your name in their language.
