My Favorite Class
After going back and reading my past entries, I am sure some people wonder if I ever go to class or if my college experience is made up entirely of weekend getaways. So, I will direct this entry to my favorite college class for this semester, Philosophy.
Whew! I know just saying the name of the class is enough to make your head hurt. I'll admit I thought the same, but that didn't last long after the first few minutes of my first class. The particular section I am in deals with values of the modern world, which usually means a class based mostly on debate type discussions on the "morality" of current issues, or at least that is what others before me told me this class would be about.
My instructor decided to do things different and gives us a kind of "greatest hits" type of structure, touching both past and modern popular philosophers and what they were about. We are doing this through reading and studying different philosophers. This is really interesting to me being that I did not have a past background or true knowledge of philosophy in general.
Now don't get me wrong, sitting down to read twenty or more pages of philosophy is very mind-boggling at times. Also, it is something you can't speed read or even read once for that matter, but it gives a challenge. Let me explain, I am the type of person who likes to be challenged, whether it be academically or just life in general (Shhh! Don't tell my parents). Yet, at the same time if it is too hard it can turn me off. That is why I like this class.
Philosophy is surprisingly my happy medium. It reinforces my believe that it you truly love something, your hard work will be enjoyable and its rewards will be beyond compare. When the reading and comprehension of the subject seems more than I can bear, I know that my instructor will be there to follow up with a clear explanation and show us how to break it down into more digestible parts. Also, if for some reason I still can't grasp a certain idea or understand the definition of a term, my instructor is willing to take the time after class or willing to schedule a time outside of class to help further. This has been very beneficial to me here at the University of Memphis. The more I am here I see how much everyone, whether it be your professors or even housekeeping staff, makes sure that their job is to help you to the best of their ability. I can tell they do this in order for you to have the best learning environment possible.
In conclusion, philosophy is my favorite class this semester and I never thought it would be. Yet, I believe it is due to the fact, besides only the subject matter, that it was one of the first examples where I was shown the resources readily available to me at The University of Memphis.

Here our group takes a break after conferences to break dance.

Jenny and Ashley show their dance moves.

Here Catherine and Stacy take a break for a photo.

Jessica and Jenny chaperone the not-so-craziness.

Not only was there workshops at the conference, but improv rock climbing. Notice: That is the side of a hotel

Here is the BSU group. What a lovely group!

Here is a picture of me and Jenny during one of the workshops.

On the last day of studying the book of Esther in the Bible, we celebrated our own version of Purim by throwing colored streamers.

The streamers were everywhere and, if you look closely, Chris Rice is leading the worship in the background.

After our celebration, we fashioned headwear out of the streamers. Will strikes his ninja pose.

Here I am with Stacy taking a supper break at the Atlanta Bread Company.

Here these lovely ladies display the beautiful purim fashion line.
