I can't believe this semester is almost over. It seems as if it was just yesterday that I was applying to The University of Memphis during my senior year of high school. There is only a little over a month until the fall semester is over and winter break begins. So now I am getting ready for next semester. I am preparing my class schedule for early registration, figuring out my work schedule on campus, and trying to manage all other aspects of life in between.
I was comparing my experience with my friends from other colleges. We all agreed that at college, there is always something to do. That's not a bad thing, necessarily. Sure, I have had my fair share of papers and studying for exams, but in between those times of running to class and work I have been able to experience another side of the campus. I have kept busy with my Campus Crusaders group, which always has something going on (i.e.: bible study, cookouts, retreats, concerts, or just hanging at Gibson's Donuts). I have formed new friendships, which come with new jokes between friends and memories. Of course, no one can forget our fun fire drills. Also, I try to keep contact with friends and family from back home, which is sometimes time consuming, but important and possible to maintain. Overall, I have had fun with all the new experiences of living on campus and attending The University of Memphis.
Being in the Honors Program, I am able to register early for classes on November 10. This is a big advantage as a freshman, because normally freshmen do not get to register until November 19 after all the upperclassmen before us register. I have been encouraged to register early in order that I might get my first pick of classes. So, this past week I went through all the steps to prepare for this: visited my advisor, checked my degree audit, and planned out my schedule online. Using my degree audit and talking to my advisor made planning my schedule, in preparation for registration, a breeze.
This past week I got an on-campus job in the Registrar's office. Even after only my first week, I love it! You are a student first with an on-campus job. So your work schedule is planned around your class schedule. The department I work they are open only on weekdays and until 4:30 p.m. So my nights and weekends are still open to go home, hang with friends, or even study.
Again, I really enjoy working in the Registrar's office and would encourage any future student to apply for an on-campus job.
Life is crazy sometimes, especially at college. Yet, I feel like I am finally falling into the swing of things here in Memphis. Already I am wiser (?) and feel more prepared for my next semester. Well, I got to go check on my laundry (which by the way is free here) and figure out what "gourmet" meal I shall have tonight. Will it be condensed soup or a bowl of cereal? Yummy.
