My first two months of college followed the same routine. Go to class in the mornings and work at night. I thought I could balance taking 14 hours in school while working 30 hours a week.
Two weeks ago I decided that I was missing out on the college experience and put in my two weeks notice. Today was my last day as a server at Red Lobster. After a crazy week in class that included a HUGE calculus test as well as an English paper I realized one thing: It came at the perfect time.
The first couple of months I was able to coast through without cracking a book, much like I did in high school. I was always good at math and figured that all I had to do was show up to make a decent grade in my Elementary Calculus class. I have one thing to say to anyone who plans on doing this in the future, it does not work. When I went to class I was late and it usually involved eating and reading the paper. After working until 10 on Thursday night and then going out to celebrate my roommate's birthday, I was not exactly prepared for my Friday morning test.
This became very obvious when I forgot my calculator and quite possibly missed every problem on the test. Luckily, Ms. Bothello drops one grade every semester so I am still alive to pull out an OK grade for the semester.
A trip home was much needed after last week. I am from Somerville, TN which is only about an hour away, but it is still nice to spend a night in a room where the air conditioner actually works. That reminds me, if any campus repairman happens to read this: Room 331 in Richardson Towers has no air conditioning!!! It was also nice to stay in my bed, one that is actually big enough to roll around in. Friday night I took my brother to Jackson to see a high school football game. Saturday was spent at work and then going to watch the movie RADIO, which may be the best movie of the year. I spent all day today at work. I went in at 11 this morning at got off at 10 tonight. I did not really mind staying so long since it was my last day.
I am looking forward to the next few weeks. I now have time to concentrate on school and enjoy the college experience. I have approximately 30 hours a week to find something to do with. I plan on giving my XBOX some much needed attention, getting back into shape, and doing something I have yet to try.........................study. I also plan to do some other things that I have not had time for the past eight months.
