Prior to 1989, the Engineering Library served as a depository for the U.S. Geological Survey. Tennessee and the bordering states of Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Kentucky were actively selected. Complete sets of topographic quadrangles for these states are now housed in the Department. When the Department became a regional federal depository in 1989, topographic maps for all state began to be received. Holdings are incomplete but growing.

The Department also receives all other maps distributed through the Depository Library Program from agencies such as the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service and the Central Intelligence Administration. Complete sets of nautical and aeronautical charts are available.

Index maps provide the principal means of access to topographic and geologic maps. In recent years cataloging records for each sheet map have been included in the Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. Maps are filed geographically in the Map Library of the Department .
