Sample Abstract Page for Thesis/Dissertation

The word Abstract should be formatting to match all other chapter-level heads in the thesis or dissertation, in accordance with the style manual or journal style that the document follows.

The thesis or dissertation citation, typed below the heading "Abstract," must be single spaced. The actual abstract text must be double spaced.

FORMATTING EXAMPLE:

ABSTRACT

          Last name, First Name Middle Name. Degree to be conferred (initials only). The University of Memphis. Month Year degree to be conferred. Title of thesis/dissertation. Major Professor: .......... .

          Actual text begins one double space below the citation and the text of the

abstract must be double spaced.


ABSTRACT

          Smith, Susan Q. Ph.D. The University of Memphis. May 2010. Dissertation Title. Major Professor: John Doe.

          This dissertation abstract must be 350 words or fewer. Masters abstracts must be

150 words or fewer.  All abstracts must be double spaced, although the above citation

should be single spaced.  Note that both the citation and the abstract paragraph are

indented.
