U of M Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Chapter Prepares Students to Enter the Workforce
By Monica Rawson

SWE Mock Interview

On Friday afternoon of February 22, 2013 the University of Memphis Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Chapter hosted their first Mock Interview event. This event consisted of five professionals from various disciplines, three speakers and twenty-five student participants from the University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University. Each student was scheduled a thirty-minute one on one mock interview and resume review. The interviewers simulated the interviewing experience for the students by asking questions about the individual’s past work experience, education and extra curriculum activities. After about twenty minutes of interviewing, the professionals gave feedback to the student about his or her interview. Besides individual tips, the professionals gave insight into what they are looking for during a preliminary interview and how to emphasize appropriate characteristics.

SWE Mock Interview

In addition to the mock interviews, workshops were running simultaneously for participants while waiting for individual interviews. The first workshop offered was about “The Job Hunt”, presented by UM Student Career Services. This lecture educated the audience about resume development, job searching and general interviewing advice. Following “The Job Hunt” was a workshop titled “Bridging the Gap from College to Career”. Two recent engineering graduates from the University of Memphis spoke about their experiences transitioning from student to professional. The audience had the opportunity to question the panel about various topics ranging from their job responsibilities to workplace relationships to what time they wake up in the morning.

SWE Mock InterviewUpon the completion of the final mock interview, a networking reception followed in the Engineering Administration Lobby. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages were generously provided by the Dean of Engineering for the students, speakers and professionals while they mingled.   The University of Memphis SWE Chapter received fantastic feedback from all of the participants. The professionals were thrilled to have an opportunity to give back to the community and seek out potential employees, while the students were appreciative of the opportunity to practice fighting nerves and collect constructive criticism.

The Mock Interview event of 2013 was a collaborative project and would not have been possible with out the support of many dedicated people. Thanks to University of Memphis SWE Chapter faculty advisor Amy Curry and Herff College Director of Development Susan Armacost. These wonderful women helped guide the undergraduate SWE officers in the right direction while planning and running the event. Thanks to the Dean of Engineering, Eugene Eckstein, as well for funding the closing reception. Last, but definitely not least, huge thanks to the University of Memphis SWE officers: Monica Rawson (President), Lorrie Hayes (Vice President), Osheana Jenkins (Treasure), Kendal Harris (Secretary).
