E-Day 2011
The Herff College of Engineering opened its doors to the community and to hundreds
of students in grades 3-12 during its E-Day open house Friday, Nov. 18. Fourteen
schools registered to attend, including public and private schools from Shelby and
Fayette counties, eastern Arkansas and homeschool groups.
“Imagine the Possibilities” showcased engineering activities and research being conducted
at the College. There were 15 demonstrations, ranging from a simulation of a building’s
response to an earthquake, industrial robotics, biomaterials and their use within
the body, and three-dimensional microscopy. Faculty, staff, students and alumni of
the Herff College were on hand to answer questions and discuss programs offered at
the College.
Students competed in a variety of competitions designed to build engineering and team
skills. Teams competed in such events as harnessing wind power, boat building, rocket
modeling, creating a K’NEX structure, and constructing the strongest cardboard beam,
along with the traditional wall- and bridge-building competitions.
The Herff College of Engineering offers undergraduate programs in biomedical, civil,
computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering and in engineering technology. Graduate
programs are offered in biomedical engineering (in partnership with the University
of Tennessee Health Science Center) and in computer, civil, electrical, and mechanical
engineering and in engineering technology. The College also houses the Ground Water
Institute, a center of expertise on ground water research and management. Other research
centers include the Center for Advanced Sensors, Center for Biofuel Energy and Sustainable
Technologies, Center for Partnerships in GIS, and the Intermodal Freight Transportation
Institute.
