Civil Engineering Student Named Student of the Year
Virginia “Annie” Wise, a graduate student pursuing her Masters of Civil Engineering
degree with a concentration in transportation, was named the 2013 National Center
for Freight and Infrastructure Research and Education (CFIRE) Student of the Year.
She was selected as the most outstanding student from the ten universities that make
up the CFIRE consortium.
Wise serves as a graduate research assistant with the Intermodal Freight Transportation
Institute (IFTI). IFTI Interim Director Dan Pallme said, “We are so proud of Annie
and her accomplishments. She is an exceptional representative for the U of M and IFTI.”
Wise will receive her award during the annual Transportation Research Board conference
held in Washington DC in January 2014.
Wise says, "I am very honored and thankful for the tremendous opportunities that the
University of Memphis and IFTI have provided me!" Prior to beginning her research
with IFTI, she received her Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Physics
from the University of Memphis where she graduated magna cum laude.
During her graduate research, Annie has been heavily involved with the West Tennessee
STEM Hub as it works to promote STEM interest and education in the region through
outreach, educational support, and the dissemination of STEM-related information.
She is also collaborating on a research project to promote livability in freight-centric
urban areas in Memphis, and will devote her thesis research to this topic. Involved
in numerous other transportation-related projects, Annie is thrilled to be studying
and researching in this field!
