Education Reaches Beyond the Classroom for Engineering Students
Research demonstrates that students learn more if they are actively engaged with the
material they are studying. The Herff College of Engineering provides numerous opportunities
for Engineering students to continue learning outside the confines of the classroom.
Herff is home to several award-winning student chapters of technical/professional
In addition to regular chapter meetings, students have the opportunity to see first-hand
the technologies they are studying by touring local companies and sites and receive
hands-on experience through participation in local, regional and national competitions:
ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) participates in a Concrete Canoe competition;
SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) designs and constructs a Mini-Baja Car for competition;
IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers) competes in an annual robotic
competition; and there are many more.
