ITE Student Chapter Garners Multiple Awards For release: July 27, 2009 For press information, contact Dr. Stephanie Ivey, 901-678-3286
The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Student Chapter at the University
of Memphis has earned three awards from the Tennessee Section of the ITE, including
Outstanding Student Chapter for 2008.
The Chapter was selected to receive the 2008 Robert Stammer Student Outstanding Student
Chapter Award based on its annual report to the Tennessee Section. The award is presented
to the student chapter who, for the school year, has contributed most to the advancement
of the transportation profession and the Tennessee Section. The chapter will be presented
with a plaque at the Tennessee Section’s Summer Meeting, and will represent Tennessee
at the ITE Southern District’s William Temple Scholarship Challenge Traffic Bowl at
the 2010 Annual Meeting. A number of criteria are used in the selection process, including
the frequency and educational value of student chapter meetings and the number of
unique activities performed. One of these unique activities is an outreach effort
with Campus School 6th graders to make them aware of career opportunities in transportation engineering.

Undergraduate Civil Engineering student Navid Jafari was selected as recipient of
the $2,000 William L. Moore, Jr. Student Scholarship. The scholarship is offered
each year for civil engineering students enrolled at a university within the State
of Tennessee who have demonstrated a strong commitment to transportation engineering.

Michael Lamport, May 2009 Civil Engineering Graduate, was selected as runner-up in
the Tennessee Section’s Student Paper Competition for his paper titled “Safe Routes
to School: Evaluation of Hanley Elementary.” The student paper competition encourages
student members of the ITE to conduct and report on independent and original research
and investigation of traffic and transportation subjects, and provides a means for
recognizing outstanding accomplishments in this area. Student papers submitted to
the Tennessee Section are also submitted to the Southern District ITE for their student
paper competition.
