"Canstruction" Event Will Build Engineering Skills and Fight Hunger For release: March 21, 2011 For press information, contact Dr. Stephanie Ivey, 901-678-3286
On Friday, March 25, the 2011 Memphis Canstruction® Competition will be held at the
Herff College of Engineering. Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a
design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people. Competing teams
showcase their talents by designing sculptures made entirely out of canned foods.
Our event has been organized by the West TN Branch ASCE Younger Member Group, and
includes teams composed of local high school students, so that the event also serves
as an outreach activity to make students more aware of career opportunities in civil
engineering. We will have approximately 125 students and teachers from local high
schools participating in this event.
The competition takes place Friday morning, and the CANstructures will remain on display
in the lobby of the EA building through next Wednesday. All of the food will be
donated to the Mid-South Food Bank at the conclusion of the exhibit. Please drop
by and take a look when you have time- the students have worked very hard, and are
really excited about the event! Since 2007, this competition has raised more than
50,000 pounds of food for the Mid-South Food Bank, which is equivalent to over 40,000
meals for people in need in the area.
