Mechanical Engineering Students Participate in International Exchange Program in Germany
The University of Memphis recently began an exchange program with the University of
Applied Sciences in Ulm, Germany (Fachhochschule Ulm, FHU). Through this program,
seniors can take up to four mechanical engineering courses offered in English which
count towards graduation requirements. The International Exchange Program gives students
a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand their horizons both academically and personally,
and it provides them with the valuable experience of working in a global economy.
Mr. Phillip Taylor, a senior in Mechanical Engineering, is our first student to enroll
in the program. Read below as Phillip reports to Memphis from the International Exchange Program in
Germany. For more information on the program, contact Dr. John Hochstein, Chair of the Department
of Mechanical Engineering at (901)678-2257 or e-mail jhochste@memphis.edu
News From Phillip Taylor in Germany
12 September --- I am here in one piece. The people at the hochschule are very helpful and are
taking good care of me. We start our orientation Monday. There are 44 people in
all who are going to be in the program this fall. About ten of us are participating
in the two week German class, and the others will arrive when the engineering classes
begin. I am in an internet cafe with a couple of Mexican students. I will keep you
posted from time to time.
21 September --- The language teacher is very good and I have found a group of people with whom
I feel very comfortable. We have done quite a bit of traveling in the first two weeks
of our stay. The international office here proudly displays the "somebody in Memphis
loves me" tiger in their office. The people I travel with are from Finland, Mexico,
and Detroit. The town is absolutely beautiful, as is just about everything around
here. The people are excellent. Also attached are some pictures from Munich and
the Munster.
So far everyone I have encountered in southern Germany has been extremely hospitable.
They do not take as much time to be polite in public, but if they have some reason
to interact with you, they are very kind. The first night I was in my dorm two people
took me in and invited me to spend time in the kitchen with them watching the Simpsons.
Before the night was over they fed me and gave me a beer. I felt right at home the
first night. The people at FHU are also warm to all of us who are strangers here.
The tutors take good care of us and really enjoy meeting new people and spending time
with the incoming students. The intensive German course is going well. The instructor
is good at getting us involved. There is a group of people including myself who have
bonded together. We have already been to Schaffhausen and Zurich in Switzerland,
Stuttgart, and Munich. The city of Ulm is beautiful in a way that you cannot find
in the states. It is a small free-thinking city, but there is plenty to do here.
What I have seen of the FHU facility is very impressive, the beer tastes good, and
the people are very open here and love to interact with new people. Plus, most people
my age took English in school, so almost everyone can tell me how to say different
things in German which is really nice. You can learn German here and still get to
interact easily with people who have lived here their whole lives.
