Herff College of Engineering Awards
The Herff College of Engineering (HCOE) is committed to the on-going recognition of
the achievements and contributions of its faculty, staff, and supporters. The HCOE
established four award programs for faculty, staff, and supporters to provide an avenue
whereby exemplary contributions and achievements could be recognized.
Because the purpose of these programs is to recognize significant contributions to
the mission of the college and the university made by individuals and teams, all faculty
and staff of the HCOE will be considered eligible recipients for the faculty and staff
awards. This includes regular full and part-time faculty and staff. The nomination
processes for each of the awards are described in more detail at the bottom of this
page.
Outstanding Staff Award
This award is presented annually to a full or part-time staff employee of the HCOE
who has made significant and sustained contributions to the college through his/her
commitment, such as excellence in service, innovative ideas, creative resolution of
problems, leadership, or outstanding teamwork. The name of the award shall be the
Herff Outstanding Staff Award. Any HCOE faculty or staff member may nominate a full or part-time staff employee
of the HCOE for the Outstanding Staff Award. Nominations are to be submitted to the
College of Engineering Awards Committee in care of the Office of the Dean by January 15 each year. The College Awards Committee will recommend no more than two of the nominees
to the Dean of Engineering. The award will be presented at the College of Engineering
Awards Dinner that is held annually in March or April, and will consist of a check
and engraved plaque.

Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award
This award is presented annually to a full or part-time faculty member of the HCOE
who has made significant and sustained contributions to the instruction of college
students through his/her innovations, such as publications, use of new technologies,
or novel laboratory experiences. The name of the award shall be the Herff Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award. Any HCOE faculty or staff member may nominate a full or part-time faculty member
of the HCOE for the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award. Nominations are to be submitted
to the College of Engineering Awards Committee in care of the Office of the Dean by
January 15 each year. The College Awards Committee will recommend no more than two of the nominees
to the Dean of Engineering. The award will be presented at the College of Engineering
Awards Dinner that is held annually in March or April, and will consist of a check
and engraved plaque.

Outstanding Faculty Research Award
This award is presented annually to a full or part-time faculty member of the HCOE
who has made significant and sustained scholarly contributions to the profession as
demonstrated by measures such as journal publications, research monographs, or external
research funding. The name of the award shall be the Herff Outstanding Faculty Research Award. Any HCOE faculty or staff member may nominate a full or part-time faculty member
of the HCOE for the Outstanding Faculty Research Award. Nominations are to be submitted
to the College of Engineering Awards Committee, in care of the Office of the Dean
by January 15 each year. The College Awards Committee will recommend no more than two of the nominees
to the Dean of Engineering. The award will be presented at the College of Engineering
Awards Dinner that is held annually in March or April, and will consist of a check
and engraved plaque.

Distinguished Engineering Service Award
This award is presented to recognize those engineers (UM engineering alumni, graduates
from another engineering school or an organization) whose professional and/or personal
achievements have brought honor and distinction to the college and who have made significant
contributions to the engineering profession. The name of the award shall be the Herff Honor Award for Distinguished Service in Engineering. The presentation of up to five awards per year may be considered. Any faculty, staff,
alumni or friend of the HCOE may submit nominations for the Distinguished Engineering
Service Award. Nominations are to be submitted to the HCOE in care of the Office of
the Dean by January 15 each year. The award will be presented at the College of Engineering Awards banquet
that is held annually in March or April, and will consist of an engraved plaque. A
duplicate plaque will be placed in the lobby of the Engineering Administration Building.
Nominations for the award shall be reviewed and approved by an anonymous committee
of engineering alumni and Advisory Council members appointed by the dean, who shall
serve as chairman.
The nominee for this award shall exhibit the following qualifications:
- has made exceptional efforts individually or through an organization to foster the
professional development of young engineering college graduates or
- has made distinguished contributions to the theory, literature, or practice of engineering
or has demonstrated unusual accomplishments or guidance in new and developing fields
of engineering or technology or
- has managed or directed an organization that has made noteworthy contributions in
design, construction, production, or service delivery through the application of complex
engineering principles or
- has made a distinguished contribution to the public or government service or the educational
system.

Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award
The HCOE Alumni Chapter seeks nominations for its Outstanding Alumni Award recipient.
This award will be presented to a deserving engineering graduate at the Engineering
Awards Dinner in the spring. We encourage nominations of graduates who have demonstrated
outstanding achievement in their personal and professional activities, academic pursuits,
research activities, service to the University, or community involvement.
Information required will be details that include the nominee’s career, honors and
awards received, and published works. Current Engineering Alumni Chapter board of
directors are not eligible for consideration.
Deadline for submission of nominations is August 25. Nominations for the Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award may be submitted by mail,

Awards Nomination Process
Nominations may be received from any source, internal or external to the college depending
on the specific award. Nomination forms for each of the awards are available from
the Office of the Dean or may be downloaded below. Nominations for Staff, Teaching,
Research, and Service awards are be submitted to the Office of the Dean by January 15 each year. Nominations should include at least the following information:
- name of the nominee
- name of the award
- description of contribution
- actions and contributions which have impacted the College and institutional mission
- name of nominator
It will be extremely helpful to the awards committee for the nominator to give as
complete a description as possible regarding what the nominee accomplished to deserve
the award.
