Forms marked with the PDF symbol (pdf) require a PDF reader. The plug-in PDF readers
in most Web browsers will allow you to read and print the forms but some of them may
not allow you to fill in the forms interactively, add your digital signature, or save
them with the filled-in information. Late versions of Adobe Reader (available free from Adobe Systems, Inc.) will allow you to do all these things with all our PDF forms (except the worksheets
for the BA degree, which are non-editable image files). (PDF forms from sources other
than the Department of History may or may not be interactive.) If your browser will
not directly load the requested PDF document into Adobe Reader, we recommend that
you save the document to your computer and then load it into Adobe Reader. You may
then print the form and fill it out manually, or you may fill it out interactively,
save the results, and e-mail the the file to the departmental office or the person(s)
who must approve your request. You should always update to the latest version of Adobe
Reader as soon as it becomes available so that you can use any new “extended features”
that are added to it.
Forms marked with the Microsoft Word symbol (MS Word) require Microsoft Word, which
most computer users have available to them. If you do not have it available, you may
use Word Viewer (available free from Microsoft Corporation; available for Windows only), which allows only viewing and printing. If the document
is in Microsoft Word 2007-2010 format (*.docx), you will need to install the Microsoft
Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats (also available free from Microsoft Corporation; available for Windows only) in addition to Word Viewer.
The “open source” programs LibreOffice (available free from LibreOffice) and OpenOffice.org 3 (available free from OpenOffice.org) will open Microsoft Office documents saved in both pre-2007 formats and 2007-2010
formats.
Although Word allows you to fill in the information and save the completed form, it
is difficult to enter the information and at the same time maintain the appearance
of the form unless the document is set up with form fields (some are, some aren’t).
We recommend that you print the blank form and fill it in manually even if you use
Microsoft Word.
