Dr. James M. Blythe, the department’s Graduate Coordinator, wrote this “Guide for
Graduate Students.” For any matters relating to the graduate program in History, send
an e-mail to jmblythe@memphis.edu, telephone 901.678.3381, send a fax to 901.678.2720, or visit his office in 141 Mitchell.
To check on routine matters, such as whether materials you sent to the department
have arrived, to ask about forms, deadlines, and other such questions, get in touch
with the graduate secretary, Karen Jackett, mkmiller@memphis.edu, 901.678.1366.
There is also a version which combines all the sections in a single large document. For a compact summary of the steps to graduation and a link to the necessary forms,
see the timetables for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs.
I made this guide purposely repetitive, to make it easier for you to find the information
you need. If you find something that is confusing, or you can’t find something in
what seems to you the obvious place, please e-mail me so that I can fix it for future readers. Also let me know if you think the guide
does not address some subject or question that you think it should.
This guide details the requirements and procedures that became effective with the
Fall 2011 semester. If you began before Fall 2011, you are entitled to follow the
requirements in force at that time. Speak to the Graduate Coordinator if you want
to follow the new requirements instead.
