Welcome to the Middle School Education Program at the University of Memphis. We are
a part of the Instruction and Curriculum Leadership Department (ICL) in the College
of Education, Health and Human Sciences. Below is current information about our Bachelor's
and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program offered in Middle School Education (MSED).
Mission Statement
The primary mission of the department is to support the overall mission and goals
of The University of Memphis and The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences
by providing leadership and quality programs through excellence in graduate teacher
education, instruction, curriculum, and instructional design and technology. These
programs target in-service teacher and pre-service as well as other instructional
curricular leaders, designers, and developers specializing in middle adolescent through
adult level pedagogy and operational domains. The Middle School Division of Instruction
and Curriculum Leadership within The University of Memphis is committed to developing
teachers who are inspired to engage in critical thinking, problem solving, and lifelong
learning. Completion of our middle school teacher preparation program signifies that
candidates for licensure have developed knowledge and skills in pedagogy and in the
disciplines, which address performance outcomes required by the state of Tennessee.
Middle School Education Degrees
- Bachelor of Science in Education
- Master's of Arts in Teaching (MAT & Licensure)
The Master of Arts in teaching degree is designated for people with outstanding undergraduate
records who are seeking initial teacher licensure at the graduate level. Students
may pursue licensure in secondary fields.
Initial Teacher Licensure
Two graduate level teacher preparation programs for initial licensure are offered
by the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. (1) A license plus a Master
of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree or (2) a license only. Both programs are available
for Middle School (4-8):
- Science
- English
- Mathematics
- Social Studies
Additional graduate work can be use to add endorsements after initial licensure has
been obtained.
