National Student Freight Symposium and Workforce Summit
As part of the National Center for Freight and Infrastructure Research and Education
(CFIRE), IFTI sponsored a combined national Student Freight Symposium and Workforce
Summit on February 5-6, 2013 at the University of Memphis. Student representatives
from fourteen universities showcased their research, connected with industry experts,
networked with their peers, and toured local freight facilities. These students are

Global Appalachian Summer Meeting
IFTI welcomed 40 members of the Appalachian Regional Commission to the University
of Memphis for their 2012 Global Appalachia Summer Meeting. Memphis is a meaningful
location for the meeting as it serves as a key Appalachian highway and intermodal
rail gateway to the west and then on to and from key Asian markets. Read More...

Hazmat Training Session
IFTI student and faculty researchers underwent training to prepare for catastrophic
events in the transportation industry. On Tuesday, May 8, we participated in a full-scale,
transportation-related hazmat training. The U of M collaborated with the Memphis-Shelby
County Local Emergency Planning Committee to conduct the hazmat emergency management
exercise on campus.

Sub-Sahara Africa Freight Forwarding Session
IFTI hosted an educational workshop about Freight Forwarding for a small delegation
from Sub-Sahara Africa. Our professional partners from Dunavant Global Logistics Group,

On Tuesday, April 10th, IFTI welcomed 300 people to the U of M campus for the Mid-South
Aerotropolis Conference. Participants included local and national elected officials

Aerotropolis University
On Monday, April 9th, approximately 75 local elected officials and business professionals
arrived on campus at 9 am to attend "The Aerotropolis University" to learn about the
Aerotropolis concept directly from Dr. John Kasarda, the man who coined the phrase.
After the Aerotropolis University meeting, IFTI invited a small group of legislative
aides and other "friends of IFTI" to learn more about the transportation industry
in Memphis. The group toured IDEXX Laboratories, the CN Hump Yard and the BSNF Intermodal
Yard.
