What is an internship? An internship is a real world work experience related to your major which may occur
during the fall, spring, or summer semester. Each semester more than 2,000 U of M
students are interning in schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and
nonprofit organizations.
How do I search for internships? Utilize the Career Services eRecruiting system to search for an internship. Each student
at the University of Memphis is provided with an eRecruiting account. Your username
is your U of M email address and the password is your date of birth (YYYYMMDD). You
will need to set up your profile which includes uploading a resume and cover letter.
You may also utilize other resources to search for an internship. (See online internship

What are the benefits to participating in an internship? 1. Explore career options early 2. Confirm career choices 3. Develop resume writing, interview, and job search skills 4. Begin to develop a network of professional contacts 5. Possibly earn a competitive wage while learning 6. Enhance your course work through real world experiences 7. Gain competitive edge for graduate school admission or employment after graduation
What should I do before applying for an internship? Prior to applying for an internship, you should consult with your academic advisor/internship
coordinator, complete the online internship orientation, and schedule an appointment
with Courtney Pierce, Assistant Director of Employer Relations and Internships. Make
sure you pay attention to the application deadlines. Visit Career Services and have
your resume/cover letter critiqued by a Career Advisor. If you do not have a resume
or cover letter, please visit the Career Services website, www.memphis.edu/careerservices
and click on “Optimal Resume” to assist in building a resume or cover letter. You
should also participate in a mock interview to strengthen your interviewing skills
before you interview with an employer. You may meet with a Career Advisor or visit
the website and click on “Optimal Interview” to practice your interviewing skills.
If I participate in an internship, can I also receive academic credit? You will be able to receive academic credit for your internship. Academic credit varies
from department to department. To receive more information about academic credit,
consult with your academic advisor/internship coordinator.
Will I receive any type of monetary stipend for participating in an internship? Internships may be paid or unpaid and varies from employer to employer. Check with
your employer to find out if any type of monetary stipend is awarded for the internship
experience.
